Cambodia import more than 50,000 tonnes of salt from India to meet domestic demand

Cambodia has continued to import more than 50,000 tonnes of salt from India to meet domestic demand, due to salt production decreasing in the country. This is according to Bun Barang, a businessman in Kampot, who is the guarantor of salt imported from India into the country. While speaking to local news today, Barang said that with the attention of the relevant ministries as well as the Royal Government he has the confidence to import salt products from abroad to supply local demand. The salt production in Kampot and Kep has been decreasing in recent years due to the rainfall happening in almost all season, said Barang. At the present, the production of salt in the country is unable to meet national demand. He said he had asked the government to start importing salt for the first time in early August 2022 and now more than 50,000 tonnes are imported from India. The imported salt arrives in the country at the port of Teuk Sap in Leuk Dek district, Kandal. He added that the import of salt to the country in the port above is closely monitored by the relevant ministries, especially the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, with expert teams inspecting the imports.
